In just a few months, another year of college will come to a close and thousands of students are beginning to ponder about what kind of work they want to do for a summer job. Just 'googling' the words "available internships" isn't likely going to be enough in today's competitive job market. If you really want to get a jump on your competition, the social media you utilize every single day could be the key to cracking the hidden job market to secure yourself the summer job that you want both financially and professionally. Here are three tips to get you moving in the right direction.
- Use The "Get Introduced" Tab Within Linked In- I wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal that the best financial move you could make during college is to get to 1,000 LinkedIn connections. Since LinkedIn is more of a two degrees of separation application than a six degrees of separation application, simply asking your network for virtual introductions to the people you really want to talk to about getting a summer job will be relatively easy if you begin asking for three to five introductions a week starting now.
- Polish Up Your Online Presence- There is nothing worse than having embarrassing or humiliating pictures or stories come up if your future employer does a basic search on you when they surf the internet. Make sure you clean up any pictures, videos, or stories that can damage your chances of landing the summer job of your dreams. This includes Facebook, Instagram, and even Pinterest.
- Make A Portfolio Of Yourself Visible- Whether you use your actual name as the domain name or you use a free WordPress blog, showing your arsenal of skills online can illustrate to a future employer you take initiative and you are social media savvy. Employers that can quickly access a virtual biography of you through a quick link will improve your odds of getting to the top of the pile.
